My Weird School Series
-Dan Gutman
Right now I am reading book number seven, Mrs. Cooney is Loony, to my second graders. I've read many books to second graders over the years. The books from this series never fail to make them laugh harder than any other book. And with jokes that will make parents smile too, it's a delight for all.
Right now A.J. has a crush on the school nurse. My kids were rolling around (literaly) on the floor with the second hand embarassment they felt when A.J. admitted his crush. I don't know how we're going to get through the rest of the book in one piece.
Anne of Green Gables
-L. M. Montgomery
Anne is exactly what I remember being as a 12 year old. While I didn't have red hair and I wasn't an orphan, I knew exactly what it felt like to worry about how I looked and desire to have what others had while trying to be content with what I did have. Her fiery spirit and ability to articulate how she saw the world was something I was always jealous of.
Now as an adult, Marilla is the hero of this story. She took her duty seriously, but it didn't blind her to what was ridiculous and delightful. In a world where it was not okay to "be merry," she couldn't help but let it overtake her. It makes it okay for the rest of us moms to laugh at ourselves as well.
